MOSCOW: More than 700,000 people, including children, were forced to leave their homes in Haiti due to the humanitarian crisis and gang violence in the country, an increase of 22 per cent compared to June, reported Sputnik.

“Over 700,000 people, more than half of whom are children, are now internally displaced across Haiti, according to a new report by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM). These latest figures show a 22 per cent increase in the number of internally displaced people since June, highlighting the worsening humanitarian situation,” the IOM said in a statement on Wednesday.

At the same time, in the last 7 months, more than 110,000 people have been forced to flee their homes due to criminal gang violence, particularly in Gressier, the statement added.

“The majority of displaced people in Haiti, around 75 per cent, are now sheltered in the country’s provinces, with the Grand Sud region alone hosting 45 per cent of all displaced individuals,” the statement read.
