BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Sarawak has called for close collaboration with Brunei to create a strong brand that resonates with consumers from the Middle East.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that with the global halal market expanding and the Middle East as a major consumer, there is a great opportunity to position Sarawak and Brunei as joint leaders in this field.

“We see tremendous potential in commercial agriculture, including paddy cultivation, aquaculture, and cattle and buffalo rearing.

“These initiatives not only aim to enhance self-sufficiency but also open new avenues for cooperation between our regions in the global market,” he said in his address during the launching ceremony of Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office in Bruenei Darussalam (STATOB) at Pavo Point here, yesterday (Oct 3).

Abang Johari added that the northern region of Sarawak also has tremendous agricultural potential that should be developed as part of the food security agenda particularly rice production in Limbang and Lawas valley including livestock development.

He said Sarawak’s collaboration extends to the energy sector, where the state is committed to supporting Brunei in achieving a 10 per cent renewable energy generation mix by 2035, as outlined in the Paris Agreement.

“Our experience and abundant resources in renewable energy make us an ideal partner on this journey,” he said.

He said Sarawak is enhancing power supply by building a 500-megawatt gas turbine power plant in Miri to power Sarawak’s northern region including Limbang and Lawas.

“This RM2 billion plant is now under construction and scheduled for completion by  2029,” he said.

Abang Johari added that tourism is another key area where the partnership between Sarawak and Brunei can flourish, particularly in promoting events that showcase Sarawak and Brunei’s vibrant cultures and stunning natural attractions.

“With that, we can utilise our airports as international travel hubs,” he said.
