KUCHING: The Sarawak Muay Thai Association (PMNS) has revealed plans for a future Muay Thai training centre to cater to the sport’s growing popularity in the state.
PMNS President Jumaat Ibrahim announced that the proposed centre would serve as a training ground for young Muay Thai talents and provide a venue for future competitions.
“We envision a large multi-purpose hall where aspiring Muay Thai fighters can train and where tournaments can be hosted,” he said when met by reporters during the TYT Muay Thai Championship Cup here, last night (Oct 5).
Jumaat pointed out that the sport’s increasing popularity highlights the need for dedicated facilities for athletes to showcase their skills.
He added discussions are ongoing regarding the potential location of the training centre.
“Wherever the government decides to intervene, we are ready to comply, God willing, as long as the infrastructure and accessibility are appropriate.
“Ultimately, it depends on the state government’s decision,” he explained.
Jumaat also acknowledged the Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Ministry’s significant support for the Muay Thai Association, particularly regarding proposals for the training centre.
“We fully support this initiative, which has the potential to create the right environment for our athletes,” he said.
He also expressed hope for solid backing and approval in the association’s quest for the training centre.
“Muay Thai is already well-known throughout Sarawak, and we play a central role in its development.
“A central hub would enable fighters from various districts to come together and compete,” he said.
Also in attendance to witness the tournament were Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) mayor Datuk Hilmy Othman.
