SIBU: Police have crippled a cable theft syndicate known as ‘Geng Dexter’ following the arrest of three locals during ‘Ops Lusuh’ last week.

Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the suspects, aged between 28 and 40, were apprehended in a series of raids conducted on Oct 3 and 4.

“Investigations revealed that the group had been actively involved in cable thefts since early this year.

“Their modus operandi involved targeting telco substation towers in remote areas, stealing cables and battery components, and selling them for profit,” he said in a statement.

Background checks found that the suspects had prior records related to property crimes and substance abuse.

All three are currently remanded to assist with investigations under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft.

Zulkipli added that with these arrests, police had successfully solved 15 cases of cable theft at telco substation towers around Sibu, resulting in losses estimated at RM45,000.

He also thanked the public for their cooperation and the information provided, which helped to cripple the syndicate.
