KUCHING: The strong partnership between the Social Welfare Council of Sarawak (SWCS) and its network of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) is vital for further strengthening the state’s social support system.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said SWCS had been instrumental in creating platforms for collaboration, advocacy and resource-sharing, which empowered its members.

“This collaboration has had a profound impact on society, particularly in the area of welfare.

“Through advocacy for accessible infrastructure, vocational training and inclusive education, these NGOs have paved the way for countless individuals with disabilities to lead fulfilling lives and fully participate in their communities,” he said.

He said this in a speech delivered by Minister of Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah during the 75th Anniversary Gala Dinner of SWCS held at Imperial Hotel Kuching here last night (Oct 5).

Abang Johari also highlighted that SWCS focused on supporting the less fortunate by assisting the homeless and people with disabilities (PWDs) as well as promoting animal welfare.

“SWCS plays a key role in fostering a compassionate, inclusive and supportive community,” he added.

SWCS was founded with the vision of promoting collaboration among dedicated groups to address societal challenges. It has since grown into a network of organisations working together to uplift the marginalised and underserved communities.

Abang Johari pointed out that the organisation’s role had become even more critical in addressing new global challenges, such as economic inequality and climate change.

“The demand for a strong social welfare system and compassionate support will only increase. I hope SWCS will continue to be a beacon of hope as we can achieve remarkable things when we serve others,” he added.

Earlier, Fatimah, representing Abang Johari, officiated at the ceremony and led the symbolic anniversary cake cutting.
