KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has announced the reactivation of two crucial initiatives, namely the “No Single-Use Plastic Bags” and “No Styrofoam Food Containers” campaigns.

This campaign is a collaborative effort with business owners and food operators in the municipality of MPP.

Chairman Tan Kai of the MPP emphasised that these efforts are vital to reducing plastic waste and fostering a more sustainable community.

“I am pleased to see more people bringing their bags when grocery shopping in supermarkets, and I also commend the business owners who have supported these initiatives,” he expressed.

These remarks were made during his speech on behalf of Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian at the opening ceremony of the Awareness Programme for Health Promotion and Environmental Sustainability in conjunction with the celebration of World Environmental Health Day 2024 at E-Mart Mall today (October 7).

About World Environmental Health Day, Tan highlighted that MPP focuses on four main objectives.

“The first objective is raising awareness, which involves educating the community about the impact of environmental factors on public health. Understanding food safety and waste management is crucial for making informed decisions.

“We believe that providing accessible information empowers individuals to take charge of their health and the environment.

“The second objective is promoting sustainable practices. This involves encouraging waste reduction, water conservation, and support for cleaner energy sources. These small actions can have a significant impact,” he elaborated.

Tan further stated that the third objective is engaging community participation to involve the general public in clean-up campaigns, tree planting, and health screenings.

“Lastly, but certainly not least, is strengthening partnerships. None of this progress would be possible without collaborations. Working together with local governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and health organizations allows us to maximize our impact,” he emphasised.

This year, MPP has emphasised integrating health promotion with environmental sustainability initiatives. The council aims to empower individuals to adopt healthier lifestyles while contributing to Earth’s protection.
