SIBU: The 1.44-kilometer enhancement of Jalan Oya into a dual carriageway is scheduled for completion by December 5 this year, announced Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Ports Development, Datuk Aidel Lariwoo.

He emphasized that the initial phase of the upgrade is advancing smoothly and is ahead of schedule.

“The first phase, covering 1.44 kilometres, is currently under construction and has achieved 1.58 per cent completion.

“The project is progressing well towards the December 5 deadline, and we anticipate the contractor will meet this timeline,” he conveyed during a visit to the project site today (Oct 7), responding to queries from reporters.

Additionally, he mentioned that the tender for the subsequent phase, which will extend the road by approximately 1 kilometre might be launched soon under the oversight of the Public Works Department (JKR).

“Phase 1 is nearing completion, with Phase 2 will follow promptly. Furthermore, three smart traffic lights will be installed in this vicinity to enhance traffic management,” he further explained.

Aidel also addressed the challenges in relocating utility infrastructure, noting that all requisite work has been concluded without displacing any residents.

“Previously, the relocation process was protracted due to policy, land surveys, and urban management matters, but these have now been resolved,” he added.

Meanwhile, Bukit Assek Assemblyman Joseph Chieng expressed optimism that the new dual carriageway would alleviate traffic congestion in Sibu.

“This marks Phase 1, targeting the most congested stretch of Jalan Oya. We hope the dual carriageway will mitigate traffic jams,” he shared.

Chieng highlighted that the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) would commence the installation of traffic lights today.

“An urgent requirement is the installation of traffic lights to prevent confusion once the road is operational. We have coordinated with SMC, and the installation process commences today.

“I have recently received complaints regarding confusion in this area, hence we trust that, for the interim, contractors can deploy traffic controllers,” he added.
