SIBU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained two individuals, including a Datuk, suspected of bribing law enforcement officers to protect their illegal subsidised diesel smuggling operations in Sibu.

According to sources, the suspects, a man and a woman in their 60s, allegedly offered bribes to several enforcement agency officers to avoid legal repercussions for their company’s misappropriation of subsidised diesel.

The duo held senior positions in the company, with the man serving as chairman and the woman as a director.

“The suspects are believed to have smuggled and sold subsidised diesel to outsiders. To protect their illicit activities, they allegedly bribed law enforcement officers,” a source revealed.

The arrests took place earlier on Tuesday (Oct 8), with one suspect apprehended at the MACC Sibu branch and the other at a medical centre in the district between 11.20 am and 12.30 pm.

Confirming the arrest, MACC Special Operations Division senior director Datuk Azmi Kamaruzaman said the case is being investigated under Section 16 of the MACC Act 2009, which pertains to the offence of bribery.
