MIRI: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, has unveiled an ambitious vision to develop Sarawak’s major cities, including Miri, into smart cities, enhancing both infrastructure and quality of life for residents and tourists alike.

“We want to transform Miri into a smart city where we have smart buses, smart buildings adhering to the Green Building Index, and smart recreational areas,” he said.

He emphasised that the concept of a smart city goes beyond technology, focusing on cleanliness, orderliness, and the behaviour of its people.

Abang Johari disclosed this during the launching of Miri Smart Buses programme here on Wednesday.

“Miri people are smart, and a smart city reflects its residents’ wisdom. If our city is clean, it shows the intelligence of the people. A city littered with garbage would indicate otherwise,” he explained.

Abang Johari highlighted the importance of public transportation in this transformation, referencing the introduction of smart buses in Miri.

“We want people to board buses in an orderly manner. A well-organised bus system will serve not just the people of Miri but also tourists. When tourists experience a well-kept city with polite and friendly people, they will spread the word about Miri being the best city,” he pointed out.

The city’s reputation as a tourist destination is central to this development plan. With two United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organistion (UNESCO) World Heritage Sites—Gunung Mulu National Park and the Niah Caves—located within its vicinity, Miri has the potential to attract more international visitors.

Abang Johari noted that efforts are being made to boost tourism further, with plans to enhance airline connectivity to Miri.

“Soon, with the help of our Transport Minister, Datuk Lee Kim Shin, we hope to secure more flights, including those from countries like South Korea, to bring more tourists to Miri,” he said.

The Premier reiterated that ongoing efforts to strengthen Sarawak’s economy, in partnership with other state leaders, will support the vision of a smart and progressive Miri.
