MIRI:  Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg revealed that a major infrastructure project is set to begin next year — a new road connecting Marudi directly to Long Terawan.

The project, which will cost over RM2 billion, is expected to transform the connectivity of rural Sarawak, with no tolls imposed on the new route.

The Premier highlighted the potential of the road, envisioning a future where areas such as Miri, Marudi and Long Terawan are seamlessly connected, with extended links to Limbang, Long Lama, creating a complete road network that will boost tourism and economic development.

“If this road had been built earlier, imagine the impact it could have had.

“Tourists would have been delighted with the easy access to these remote destinations. This is why we are also focusing on upgrading the central bus station in Miri, making it a major hub similar to those in developed countries,” Abang Johari told reporters after launching Miri Smart Buses programme on Wednesday.

The newly upgraded bus station in Miri will be connected to other major transport hubs, including Bintulu, Sibu and eventually Kuching.

This interconnected network will enhance the transportation system across the state, benefiting not only tourists but also local communities.

Abang Johari also emphasized the importance of integrating technology into the transport system.

He mentioned the installation of CCTV cameras on buses and the development of mobile apps that allow parents to track their children’s journeys, ensuring safety and convenience.

“We can trace our children as they go to school by bus, knowing they are safe. With digital connectivity and apps, we can monitor them in real-time,” he said.

On the development of Miri and its surrounding areas, the Premier expressed confidence that the city would continue to thrive.

He mentioned plans to upgrade facilities in Batu Niah, although certain areas under UNESCO protection, such as Niah Caves, would remain untouched.

The road project and other infrastructure upgrades are part of the Sarawak government’s broader strategy to enhance connectivity and improve the lives of its citizens, particularly in remote areas.

Abang Johari also stressed the importance of unity and strong governance in driving Sarawak’s socio-economic progress.

“Although the costs are high, it is our responsibility to ensure the development of the state. With a strong government and united people, we will continue to elevate Sarawak’s socio-economy,” he added.
