MIRI: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to support the corporate sector, particularly oil companies

In his speech during the official opening of One Shell Square Miri (OSSM) at Marina Times Square on Wednesday (Oct 9), he praised the developer, Pantai Bayu Indah Sdn Bhd — a joint venture with LCDA Holdings — for setting a new benchmark in eco-sustainable developments in Sarawak.

He highlighted the 13-storey One Shell Square (OSSM) as a landmark structure within Miri Times Square, representing the city’s growth into a modern hub.

“Mirians, and Sarawakians in general, should be proud of this achievement,” he said, adding that the environmentally friendly design sets the tone for future developments in the state.

He also emphasised that OSSM, which serves as Shell Malaysia’s new upstream headquarters, is a symbol of progress for both Miri and the wider Sarawak region.

During a tour of the building, the Premier was briefed on its unique features, which include the first Shell Café and Shell Recharge EV site in East Malaysia, catering to electric and hybrid vehicles.

“The work environment at OSSM is one of a kind that every Sarawakian and Mirian can be proud of. Thank you, Shell, for setting the benchmark of a modern office in Sarawak,” Abang Johari said, acknowledging Shell’s role in transforming Miri from a small village to a thriving city over the past century.

The Premier also noted Shell’s long-standing partnership with the Sarawak government in driving the state’s future growth, particularly in the green energy space.

He expressed hope for continued collaboration, especially in carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) technologies.

“We have enacted legislation to promote and develop CCUS in offshore Sarawak. Petros is our resource manager to promote and develop carbon storage sites,” he said, adding that Sarawak is currently undertaking three CCUS projects, one of which involves a consortium of Japanese oil and gas companies.

Abang Johari recalled his presence at Marina Times Square in August 2022 when he witnessed the symbolic handover of the letter of award by Shell to Pantai Bayu Indah for the construction of the OSSM building.

He commended the smooth collaboration between the parties involved and expressed pride in the city’s continued development as a pioneer in Malaysia’s oil and gas industry.

“Oil was first discovered at Canada Hill in Miri, which is just across from where I am standing,” he said, noting the historical significance of the site.

“It is always nice to be back in Miri to witness the development taking place in this city.”

The opening ceremony was also attended by several cabinet ministers, Shell executive vice president of Conventional Oil & Gas Peter Costello, and country chair of Shell Malaysia and senior vice president of Integrated Gas & Upstream Malaysia Siti Sulaiman.

The 13-storey One Shell Square Miri is not only Sarawak’s first Grade A corporate office but also a certified Gold Green Building Index (GBI) building, reflecting the state’s ongoing commitment to sustainability.
