KUCHING: A local businessman in his 50s became the latest victim of a phone scam, losing more than RM560,000 in a fraudulent scheme.

According to Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata, the incident occurred in mid-September when the victim was contacted by an unknown individual claiming that a package belonging to him had been detected in Perlis.

The scammer, posing as a police officer from Perlis, managed to convince the businessman to transfer funds through multiple online transactions over a two-week period.

The victim only realised he had been scammed after discussing the matter with his wife.

Mancha urged the public to stay vigilant and avoid engaging with suspicious phone calls or messages from unknown individuals.

He advised the public to verify unfamiliar phone numbers through the ‘Whoscall’ app or consult the ‘Check Scammers CCID’ website to prevent falling prey to such scams.
