KUCHING: Sarawak is ready to learn, to adapt, and to lead in areas that matter most to the future of the planet – whether it be green energy, renewable energy, sustainable agriculture or digital innovation.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the Sarawak Future Forum 2024 brought together global experts, thought leaders, and practitioners from diverse fields.
“It is our hope that through these discussions, we will gain new perspectives and insights into how to create a more just and sustainable economy.
“This event marks an important moment for Sarawak as we stand on the threshold of a new era in our economic development.
“We gather not only to discuss the future of Sarawak but to think critically about the sustainability of our growth, the well-being of our people, and the legacy we leave for the future generations,” he said when delivering his keynote address at Sarawak Future Forum 2024 at Sheraton Hotel here, today.
He said the state is also dedicated to pioneering Hybrid Paddy Cultivation and AI-driven Farming to boost rural productivity and income, aligning with the government’s goals to reduce poverty and improve living standards.
“These efforts also support our Rice Self-Sufficiency target by 2027, ensuring sustainable agricultural practices that benefit farmers and meet broader sustainability goals.
“The initiative is aimed at reducing reliance on imported rice, strengthening food security, and ensuring the competitiveness of Sarawak’s agricultural sector,” he added.
He also said that central to Sarawak’s vision is investing in human capital development, the government is prioritising Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education and vocational training.
“Collaborations with universities and industry leaders promote innovation in renewable energy and advanced manufacturing, preparing the workforce for future demands.
“At the heart of our development strategy is the principle of inclusivity. We are determined to ensure that the benefits of economic progress are shared by all segments of society,” he said.
He added that social equity must also be a guiding principle to develop policies and programmes that ensure every Sarawakian, regardless of background, has access to opportunities for education, employment, and entrepreneurship.
“To truly measure our success, we must ask ourselves: Are we creating a society where everyone has a chance to succeed?
“Are we building a future where no one is left behind? These are the questions that must guide our work in the years ahead,” said Abang Johari.
