KUCHING: Sarawak Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) has been urged to tread carefully in its political manoeuvres ahead of the next state election.

Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) vice president Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has warned the opposition party against “rocking the boat in the name of democracy”.

Karim, who expressed no direct opposition to Sarawak PKR’s plans – including its upcoming state-wide roadshow – advised the party to consider the potential consequences of its actions, especially in terms of creating discord among Sarawakians.

His remarks come in response to Sarawak PKR’s announcement that it intends to contest every seat allocated to it by Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the next state election.

The opposition party also plans to launch a membership drive and roadshow in November as part of its preparation for the polls.

When asked whether this move might strain ties between Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) at the federal level, Karim deferred the matter to top PH leaders, stating that it was for them to decide.

“The unity government is set up on a foundation of trust. Let’s see who will breach that trust.

“My humble advice to Sarawak PH is to support the existing GPS government and not to rock the boat in the name of democracy,” Karim told FMT.

Sarawak PKR, however, is confident that its political strategy will not impact the relationship between GPS and PH.

Sarawak PKR deputy chairman Ahmad Nazib Johari emphasised the mature friendship between GPS chairman Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and PH chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, asserting that the state election would not undermine their ties.

Nazib clarified that the roadshow is not designed to attack the state administration but to educate the public on government policies while strengthening PKR’s election machinery.

“We have no intention of disrupting the harmony of the existing government,” he said.

He noted that Sarawak PKR’s focus is on reforms to improve areas in Sarawak that still need  attention.
