KUCHING: Integrity is essential to shaping Sarawak’s future, beginning with each individual’s commitment to upholding strong integrity principles.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Abang Johari Tun Openg said that this value is deeply rooted in the teachings of all religions, including Islam, where concepts such as muraqabah (mindfulness) and wasatiyyah (moderation) are stressed as crucial in controlling human desires.
“We adhere to our respective religious teachings, whether it be Islam or other religions. In Islam, I can share the concept of muraqabah and the emphasis on moderation.
“This is important because one of our greatest challenges is desire. If we cannot control our desires, we will be overwhelmed by these challenges.
“Alhamdulillah, the people of Sarawak, whether Muslims or non-Muslims, have maintained a high culture of integrity among their leaders and citizens,” he said.
He said this in his remarks for Amanat Perdana Integriti (MAP-I) 2024 at Dewan Kompleks Islam Sarawak here on Thursday.
However, Abang Johari raised his concerns as there are signs that integrity can be compromised especially in facing scam issues through social media.
“There are cases of people losing their pensions or getting deceived by promises made on social media. Ultimately, those who deceive are individuals without strong morals or integrity.
“That is why we must reflect on ourselves and our surroundings. At the end of the day, you are accountable to God. When we pass away, we leave everything behind, and all that remains are our deeds on this Earth.
“If that is our approach, God willing, we will succeed both in this world and the hereafter. Carrying out our duties is an act of worship.
“May Allah guide us in fulfilling our responsibilities. I am confident that the people of Sarawak remain committed to the trust placed in us,” he stressed.
As of now, Abang Johari said Sarawak has produced 211 Certified Integrity Officers (CeIOs), who have been placed across various ministries with 25 officers, 64 officers in departments, 55 officers in statutory bodies (BBNs), 28 officers in local authorities (PBTs), 27 officers in the state’s Resident Offices, and 12 officers in other agencies.
“This makes Sarawak the state with the highest number of CeIOs compared to other states in Malaysia.
“I believe this significant number has realised our goal of placing at least one CeIO in every agency in Sarawak. While this is an achievement we can be proud of, what is more important is that CeIOs perform their roles and responsibilities with excellence, full accountability, and integrity.
“When CeIOs carry out their duties effectively, it not only strengthens the public’s trust in government leadership but also ensures more transparent governance, free from corrupt practices,” said Abang Johari.
