KUCHING: Consistent training for media practitioners is essential to help them adapt to the digital age in this millennium.

Malaysia Press Institute (MPI) President Datuk Yong Soo Heong cited this, acknowledging that the global media industry has undergone numerous challenges such as the need to keep abreast with new technologies.

Yong stated that MPI has to also revamp itself, adding that the institute had to reach out to the news organisation in Sarawak to find out what can be improved, and done to upgrade the skills for media practitioners.

“From your inquiries, we know the kind of training that we can conduct.

“For instance, we can conduct more training for media practitioners on handling videos and photos whilst managing the equipment” he said.

He relayed this during a courtesy visit to the chief executive officer of Sarawak Tribune and Suara Sarawak Datuk Dr Jeniri Amir at the newspaper’s office here today (Oct 10).

“We are not just handling media practitioner, we would also like to engage more with the university and college students.

“That is for us to ensure that there will be ample supply of talents to move into this media industry once they are ready, as the older media practitioners will eventually retire and leave the media industry,” he said.

Also present during the visit were MPI chief executive officer Ainol Amriz Ismail, MPI general manager Norlida Jamalin, Sarawak Tribune editor-in-chief Aden Nagrace, Sarawak Tribune executive editor Harry Henry Julin, Sarawak Tribune senior manager Corporate Division Dorge Rajah, Suara Sarawak’s executive editor Rohana Wahed and other distinguished guests.
