MIRI: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) successfully detained a Vietnamese fishing vessel approximately 174 nautical miles northwest of Tanjung Baram, here yesterday (Oct 11).
Miri Maritime Zone director Captain Mohd Khairol Anuar Saad said the apprehension was carried out by one of the agency’s vessels conducting patrols in Sarawak waters as part of operations including Op Khas Raja Laut, Op Permai, Op Khas Naga Timur, and Op Tiris.
Initially, the Vietnamese vessel (VNA) did not cooperate and attempted to flee when ordered to stop. In response to the escalating situation, the MMEA vessel swiftly intercepted and performed a force boarding to halt the VNA.
Upon inspection and search, authorities suspect the VNA originates from Vietnam based on its registration number, design, and physical characteristics. The vessel was manned by four crew members and a captain, all male, aged between 35 and 55, who are believed to be Vietnamese nationals based on their spoken language. None of them possessed identification documents.
The total estimated value of the seized items is approximately RM 1.5 million. The VNA and its crew have been escorted to the Miri Maritime Zone Vessel Detention Center for further investigation.
The case is being investigated under the Fisheries Act of 1985. If found guilty, the captain could face a fine of up to RM 1 million, while the crew could incur fines not exceeding RM 100,000 or imprisonment for up to two years.
