MIRI : The “Program Semarak Komuniti Miri and Miri City Car-free Day 2024” held here today (Oct 13) has reaffirmed Miri’s commitment to urban sustainability and environmental preservation, aligning with national efforts to create more livable cities.
Speaking on behalf of Miri mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang, Cr Jamil Bujang emphasised the city’s dedication to sustainable development, which is in line with the Ministry of Housing and Local Government’s Urban Community Sustainability Programme (PKKB).
“Today’s programme is a clear demonstration of our strong commitment to promoting urban sustainability,” he stated during the event held at Miri Wireless Walk, Jalan North Yu Seng.
“Miri is not only known for its natural beauty and appeal as a tourist destination, but the responsibility to protect the environment and ensure the city’s well-being requires the collective effort of everyone,” Yii added.
He highlighted Miri City Council’s vision of transforming Miri into a “Green, Smart, and the Most Livable International Resort City,” reflecting its ongoing efforts toward achieving sustainable urban development.
Yii noted that initiatives like Miri Car-Free Day play a crucial role in the city’s goal of becoming a low-carbon city.
“By closing off roads to vehicles in certain areas, we can experience a more peaceful city, free from traffic congestion and air pollution,” Yii said.
He added that the event not only allows residents to enjoy a greener, cleaner, and healthier environment, but also raises awareness of how small actions can lead to significant improvements in the environment and public health.
“I believe this initiative will help reduce our carbon footprint, promote healthier lifestyles, and encourage the community to reduce carbon emissions by minimising the use of motor vehicles,” he continued.
The event also showcased the involvement of various stakeholders, including government agencies, private companies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and local residents, demonstrating the collaborative efforts needed to sustain the city.
He also praised the Miri City Council for successfully organising a programme that unites these sectors in pursuit of sustainability goals.
The programme drew more than 500 participants, underscoring strong public interest in supporting Miri’s sustainability initiatives. Also present at the event was Acting Miri City Council Secretary Abdul Rahman Taupek.
