SIBU: Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Deputy Minister Datuk Micheal Tiang Ming Tee stressed that safety issues need to be taken seriously to instil confidence in foreign investors.

Without serious attention, he said this could hinder the state government’s efforts to achieve its development vision, outlining the importance of community-based crime prevention strategies as one of the best ways to reduce crime rates.

“While achieving a zero-crime rate may be difficult, efforts to minimise crime rates as much as possible should be a priority,” he said during the Town Hall Discussion 2024 — ‘Crime Talk: Preparedness in Addressing Crime Issues’ at the Chancellor Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud Hall, Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS) here, on Monday (Oct 14).

Tiang asserted that public safety is a shared responsibility requiring close collaboration between the community and the police.

He also praised the initiatives by the Sibu district police headquarters (IPD) and the Sarawak police contingent headquarters (IPK) for organising such awareness programmes.

The Pelawan assemblyman said programmes like this are vital in enhancing public awareness of crime prevention measures and strengthening trust between the police and the public.

The event was attended by 600 people, including community leaders, government agencies, and students, aiming to discuss crime prevention measures and reinforce relationships between the community and local authorities.

It provides a platform for the community to share ideas, express opinions, and seek insights into preventing various forms of criminal behaviour.
