KUCHING: The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development plans to allocate a special fund for a knowledge conference aimed specifically at youths in Sarawak.

Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah stated that he will discuss the matter with the ministry’s permanent secretary Morshidi Fredrick.

“We can set aside most likely around RM1 million or RM2 million which to me, is a suitable amount to start with,” he said after attending the policy dialogue session at the International Conference on Tropical Sciences (TropSc 2024) here today (Oct 16).

Additionally, Abdul Karim encouraged the youth to participate in a conference such as TropSc2024.

“Because it is something that is good to them, such as character development and to become more knowledgeable on what is going on.

“After all, in order for us to progress, you have to build up that networking and acquire the knowledge through conferences that we have.

“Anyone who wants to become a leader must have some knowledge and they cannot become leaders without acquiring it,” he added.

TropSc 2024 is part of the response to critical issues in the tropics, such as climate change, biodiversity decline, deforestation and habitat loss.

About 300 participants from 20 countries are involved in the conference, including from the United Kingdom, Singapore, Thailand, Australia, Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, and Timor-Leste.

The Oct 16-17 conference will conclude with the establishment of the Alliance of the Tropics and the Kuching Declaration for the Tropics.
