SIBU: The Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) Sibu Branch is celebrating a significant milestone this year, marking its 50th anniversary since its establishment on Dec 7, 1974.

According to its secretary, Samuel Sila Mathew Unjah, SDNU was officially registered under the Societies Act 1966, and the branch has now grown to become the largest SDNU branch in Sarawak.

He added that Sibu SDNU was founded with its first office at the Methodist Iban Centre, Queen’s Way, Sibu, with the late Temenggong Jonathan Bangau Renang serving as its inaugural chairman.

“To commemorate the Golden Jubilee, Sibu SDNU has planned several celebratory events, starting with a Thanksgiving Prayer on Nov 23 at Rumah SDNU Sibu, Taman Bougenvilla, Mile 8, Jalan Sibu-Ulu Oya.

“Following this, a Fun Walk at Permai Lake Garden here will be held on Nov 30, alongside a blood donation drive and health screening.

“The pinnacle of the celebrations will be the Golden Jubilee Dinner on Dec 7 at Good Happiness Restaurant, Jalan Pahlawan,” he said in a press statement today (Oct 17).

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas is expected to grace the event and other distinguished guests, including the branch’s pioneer leaders, will also be in attendance.

“The theme for the 50th-anniversary celebration, ‘From roots to wings, the journey continues’, highlights the branch’s growth and resilience over the years.

“During the dinner, there will be a tribute to former leaders, a presentation of the branch’s history, and the recognition of members or their children who have excelled academically,” he said.

Dinner tickets are still available for purchase. Interested attendees can contact Samuel at 013-7117477, or treasurer Athanasius Jala at 013-8165667 for more details.
