MCC inks MoU with China’s Shiyan City

MIRI: A memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Miri City Council and Shiyan City, China to formalise a friendship city partnership was signed recently.

According to a press statement by Miri City Councli (MCC), Mayor Adam Yii lauded the agreement saying it marked an important milestone in the diplomatic relationship between the two cities.

“The signing of today’s (MOU) between Miri and Shiyan City is a significant milestone that opens the door to new collaborative opportunities.

“I believe this partnership will bring tremendous benefits to both cities, fostering cooperation across various sectors such as the economy, culture, and tourism, while creating new opportunities for growth,” he said.

He stated this during the Signing Friendship City MoU between Miri City and Shiyan City, Hubei, China, held here yesterday.

Yii said Shiyan’s Wudang region is renowned for its traditional Chinese medicine industry, which could pave the way for deeper exchanges in both Western and traditional medicine.

“This year also marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China, making it a privilege to participate in this historic moment.

“I am confident that the friendship between our cities will continue to thrive for many years to come,” he added.

He cited that Malaysia has always maintained close ties with China, and Sarawak, in particular, has fostered strong relationships, evidenced by the presence of the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Sarawak.

“This direct channel enhances our capacity to collaborate with Chinese provinces and municipalities, including this promising partnership between Miri and Shiyan,” Yii asserted.

“While traveling from Miri to Shiyan currently requires several connecting flights, I hope that one day we will establish a direct flight route, further bridging the distance between both cities.

“I also warmly welcome private enterprises to explore opportunities for collaboration with Miri City, as we work together to achieve mutual growth and success,” he said.
