KUCHING: Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) has introduced 3R Smart Community Stations for Sustainable Waste Management within its area.

The first such initiative was launched on Sunday (Oct 20) to encourage community participation in environmental cleanliness efforts.

Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication (Utility) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said this is one of DBKU’s efforts to make recycling activities easier and smarter in the DBKU area.

“The 3R Smart Community Station is a platform specifically for collecting, processing, and managing recyclable materials.

“The 3R station is equipped with solar-powered lights, a rainwater harvesting system (SPAH), weighing scales, tables and chairs, recycling bins, signboards, and fire extinguishers,” he said after officiating the first 3R Smart Community Station at Kompleks Sukan Satok Padang SLPAS.

According to him, the uniqueness of this programme lies in the provision of a waste disposal system using the 3RKU application, which refers to ‘Reuse, Reduce & Recycle’.

“This innovative apps is one of the DBKU initiatives in developing a smart app to streamline the recycling process in Kuching North city areas.

“By using this process with the application provided, it is easier for local residents to send recyclable items and exchange them for cash.

“So, with the application provided by DBKU at these stations, it will offer a more efficient, effective, and faster method for disposing of local waste,” he said.

He also said that a total of 14 3R stations have been built in the DBKU area, including at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Muara Tebas, Sepakat Jaya Demak Laut, Surau Darul Hijrah, SMK Tunaz, SK Rakyat Tupong, Dewan Masyarakat Kampung Tunku, and SMK Sungai Maong.

“This is an effort to ensure that we all can take care of our environment so that it remains clean, especially in the North Kuching area,” he said.

Meanwhile, DBKU mayor Datuk Hilmy Othman said in addition to this, further action on this initiative will be taken in the future.

“We are looking forward to involve industry in this initiative. We plan to introduce a similar concept in industrial areas, particularly in Demak Laut Industrial Estate and Sejingkat Estate, to ensure proper waste management.
