KUCHING: Social policy plays a crucial role in addressing issues on the well-being of a child.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the policy is not merely a safety net, but a foundation for sustainable development.

“By investing in social protection systems, we can provide support to the most vulnerable population, including migrants, slum dwellers, and those affected by climate change.

“In Sarawak, we have made significant strides in enhancing our social protection framework.

“Our initiatives aim to ensure that no child is left behind, and we are committed to improving access to education and healthcare for all,” he said in his text of speech, read by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas during the opening ceremony of ‘The 2nd Regional Social Policy Conference 2024: Prioritising Investment in Children in a Changing Region’ at Hilton Hotel here, today.

Abang Johari said that currently the East Asia and Pacific Region are home to over two billion people, with approximately 400 million children.

“However, the region also faces inequalities, with around 20 per cent of children living in poverty. Sarawak is not excluded.

“Hence, this is a call for action for all of us. We must ensure that every child has access to quality education, healthcare, and social protection,” he added.

On the conference, Abang Johari saidthe theme ‘Prioritising Investment in Children in a Changing Region’ could not be timelier.

“As we navigate the complexities of our modern world, it is imperative that we place our children at the centre of our social policies.

“Investing in children is not merely a moral obligation, it is an economic necessity.

“Research has shown that early investment in education and health yield significant returns, not only for individuals but for society,” Abang Johari added.
