Two fined RM650 each for rioting

KUCHING: Two locals, who engaged in a public altercation, were each fined RM650 in default two weeks jail by the Magistrate’s Court here.

Mohd Renaldor Masdor, 26, and Awang Norman Effendy Awang Mazlan, 37, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Alwi to the charge under Section 160 of the Penal Code.

The offence carries a penalty of up to six months’ imprisonment, a fine of up to RM1,000 or both.

They were charged with rioting in front of a car accessories shop along Jalan Sekama at around 9.40 pm on Oct 8.

According to the case facts, a crime prevention patrol arrested the two men after they were found brawling in public.

Investigations revealed that the altercation had disturbed public order. The dispute reportedly escalated after a misunderstanding, with both men hurling abusive words at each other.

Insp Nur Ain Wong Abdullah prosecuted, while the accused were represented by National Legal Aid Foundation counsels Wong Jo Yiin and Tan Yen Hee.
