KUCHING: In a thrilling encounter at Sarawak State Stadium on Sunday, Kuching City FC and Negeri Sembilan FC battled to a dramatic 1-1 draw, leaving fans on the edge of their seats until the final whistle.
The match seemed destined for a heroic finish for The Cats when new signing Hazwan Bakri scored in stoppage time.
However, the joy was short-lived, as Negeri Sembilan’s captain, Annas Rahmat, equalised with a towering header just moments later, dashing the hopes of the home crowd.
Kuching City controlled much of the game, showcasing their skill and determination despite challenging conditions on a wet pitch.
They played a high line, with Negeri Sembilan sitting deep and waiting to counter. At times, James Okwuosa, The Cat’s captain who plays as a centre back, was beyond the halfway line, almost operating as a midfielder.
Kuching City FC’s head coach Aidil Sharin’s tactics paid off, particularly with effective attacking play down the right wing. Jimmy Raymond’s overlapping runs and Nur Shamie Iszuan’s threatening crosses created numerous opportunities, but the finishing touch eluded them.
One of the best chances came when Jimmy Raymond’s precise cross found Jordan Mintah, whose header went agonisingly wide, prompting gasps from the stands.
Hazwan’s introduction in the second half brought fresh energy, yet he was unable to convert a close-range chance that went wide.
It looked set to be a long night for The Deers, as The Cats maintained their pressure,bolstered by over 1,000 loyal fans who braved the rain to rally behind their local team in hopes of a positive scoreline.
Tensions flared late in the game when Kuching City players appealed for a penalty after claiming a handball by a Negeri Sembilan defender.
However, after a review, by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) ruled the appeal invalid,leaving Kuching City frustrated.
As the final whistle blew, both teams left the pitch with mixed feelings. For Kuching City FC, it was a reminder of the cruel nature of football, where triumph and despair can be separated by mere moments.
The Cats need to regroup and refine their finishing as they aim to build on their strong performances against KL City in the Malaysian Super League at home on Saturday (Oct26) at 8pm.
