KUCHING: Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC), the primary implementing agency for Sarawak’s digital economy initiatives, and Maxis, Malaysia’s leading integrated telecommunications company, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore opportunities for advancing digitalization and talent development initiatives in Sarawak.

The collaboration was formalized through an MoU exchange during the International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak 2024 (IDECS 2024) in the presence of the Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak, Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi.

SDEC was represented by its Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Ir. Ts. Sudarnoto Osman, while Maxis was represented by the Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Mariam Bevi Batcha.

“SDEC and Maxis will jointly explore digitalization opportunities in Sarawak through Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity, including NarrowBand-IoT (NB-IoT) technology,” according to a press release by SDEC today (Oct 23).

As part of its talent development agenda, SDEC will leverage Maxis’ expertise to nurture technology knowledge and skills among Sarawak’s workforce, ensuring that local talent is equipped for the digital economy of the future.

This collaboration aligns with the Sarawak Digital Economy Blueprint 2030, which outlines the government’s vision to expand the digital economy while fostering an inclusive and sustainable digital society by 2030.

“We anticipate collaborating with a like-minded partner in Maxis, sharing a commitment to developing the right connectivity solutions and digital talent to meet the current and future needs of Sarawak.

“Together, we can explore innovative approaches to drive digitalisation in the region, bolstering Sarawak’s position as a burgeoning hub for cutting-edge technology.

“This aligns with our unwavering dedication to accelerating economic prosperity for all Sarawakians through digitalization,” said Chief Executive Officer of SDEC, Datuk Ir Ts Sudarnoto Osman.

“Alongside SDEC, we are excited about enhancing connectivity and technology talent development in Sarawak. This partnership signifies the latest milestone in our dedication to supporting Sarawak’s digital goals.

“Last year, we were the first telecommunications company to establish a regional internet hub in Sarawak, facilitating direct internet access to international content.

“We will further our commitment by investing in our rapid, secure, and reliable network, as well as exploring future-ready use cases powered by 5G,” said Goh Seow Eng, Chief Executive Officer of Maxis.

Maxis’ collaboration with SDEC is consistent with its ongoing efforts to promote 5G Smart City and industry solutions. These efforts include piloting use cases that benefit local governments and property developments, as well as collaborating with technology partners on joint 5G-Advanced innovations to support businesses and industries.

SDEC is dedicated to contributing to Sarawak’s digital and connectivity aspirations through various initiatives such as public-private partnerships, Centers of Excellence (CoE), and innovative research and development programs.

Earlier this year, SDEC entered into Multi-Operator Core Network (MOCN) service agreements with four Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), including Maxis, to enhance digital connectivity in rural areas of Sarawak.
