Substance abuse lands man in prison for 10 months

KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here sentenced a local man to 10 months in prison after pleading guilty to being involved in substance abuse last month.

Mohammad, 40, made the plea as soon as the charge was read out before Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan today (Oct 24).

He was charged with abusing amphetamine and methamphetamine drugs at the Kuching Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division (NCID) office at around 5.30 pm on Sept 24.

Therefore, he was charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 15(1) of the same Act.

Upon conviction, he could face a maximum fine of RM5,000 or imprisonment for up to two years and is required to undergo police supervision for three years.

Ling ordered Mohammad to be placed under police supervision for three years after serving his term.

Based on the case facts, Mohammad’s initial urine screening was positive for drugs while he was detained at Kuching NCID office.

Later, the sample was taken to the Sarawak General Hospital’s Pathology Department and the report confirmed that he tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.

Insp Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin prosecuted the case while the man was unrepresented by counsel.
