KUCHING: The Sarawak government has accepted the open apology made by former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak concerning the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in a brief reply said, “We (Gabungan Parti Sarawak) accept his (Najib) apology.”

Abang Johari said this to reporters when asked to comment on Najib’s open apology when met at the Kuching Waterfront here on Saturday.

Earlier, the Premier officiated at the Sarawak Regatta – Kuching Waterfront Festival 2024 which is being held from Oct 25 to Nov 3.

On Friday, Najib publicly apologised to all Malaysians over the 1MDB scandal, which happened during his tenure as Prime Minister and Finance Minister.

In a statement read out by his eldest son, Datuk Mohamad Nizar, at a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex, Najib insisted that he was innocent and blamed businessman Jlo Low and Petrosaudi executive for the debacle. Meanwhile, the Kuala Lumpur High Court will decide next Wednesday whether Najib must defend himself in the 1MDB corruption case, which began five years ago.
