KUCHING: A local businessman struck gold when he bagged RM1 million in the Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) Premium Savings Certificate (SSP) special draw.

Mohamad Hasta Karim, 41, hailing from Serian, expressed his astonishment at winning the lucky draw, stating it was an unexpected turn of events.

Commencing his savings journey with the SSP in 2014, the roasted chicken vendor mentioned that he initially stashed away money for future needs.

“Winning this sum still feels surreal because RM1 million is a significant amount for me. Even with consistent savings until retirement, accumulating this sum would have been nearly impossible,” he shared.

He made these remarks when approached by the media during BSN’s 104th Millionaire gathering at the Waterfront Hotel earlier today.

Reflecting on his initial reaction upon learning about his triumph, he conceded that he mistook the call from BSN as a scam attempt.

“I must confess, upon receiving the call, I was wary due to the prevalence of scams. But upon verifying my win with the bank representative, I was truly overwhelmed,” he recounted.

Planning to utilize the prize money, the father of three expressed his intent to use it for a family pilgrimage to perform Umrah.

“Furthermore, I aim to persist in saving and to expand my business at the night market,” he added.

Mohamad Hasta emerged as the sixth winner of the BSN SSP lucky draw in Sarawak.

To be eligible for the draw, individuals must be at least 12 years old, maintain a minimum savings balance of RM3,000, and uphold a minimum deposit period of 60 days within the BSN SSP scheme.
