ASAJAYA: Hotel check-in and check-out times are managed by local government councils and the hotels themselves, says Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts.

He noted that there should not be strict regulations imposed on hotels in Sarawak.

“We at the ministry can only offer suggestions regarding check-in and check-out operations,” he said. “From my experience, most hotel operators are quite flexible with their timing.”

He added that excessive regulation from the ministry and local councils would not benefit the hospitality sector, which is known for its flexibility and customer service.

He shared these remarks when speaking to reporters after a water tank handover ceremony at Kampung Serpan Laut Multipurpose Hall on today (Oct 25).

Additionally, Abdul Karim stated that hotel operation and broader hospitality industry should not be over-regulated.

“Instead, I encouraged flexibility from both the government and the hotels to ensure a welcoming environment for guests,” he added.

Recently, Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing told the Dewan Rakyat that regulating hotel operations falls under the jurisdiction of state governments.

While MOTAC requires hotels to register as tourist accommodation, specific operational aspects like check-in and check-out timings are controlled by state authorities.

This clarification followed an inquiry by Bukit Gantang MP Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal, who questioned MOTAC’s monitoring of hotel check-in and check-out practices.

Guests have raised concerns about hotels setting check-in at 4pm and check-out at 11am, whereas most operate with a 2pm check-in and 12pm check-out standard.
