KUCHING: The Sarawak government is currently studying the feasibility of setting up its own pension fund for the state’s civil servants.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said as the state’s economy will shift further towards high technology, there is a need for innovative changes in the public sector structure.
“I know our work is increasing, which is why I asked the State Secretary to restructure our civil service. We won’t need to rely solely on the pension, and we should adopt a new approach to retirement.
“Currently, we are studying whether it is Jawatan Berasaskan Caruman (Contribution Based Position) and we set up our own pension fund or collaborate with Employees Provident Fund (EPF).
“With these new measures, we can raise salaries, I pity you (Sarawak civil servants), the salaries are currently low and limited by law.
“But, if we create an independent system and look for innovative ideas, (it will) make your (civil servants) salaries more competitive in the market,” he said.
He said this during the Sarawak Civil Service Innovation Convention Awards (SCSICA) 2024 Presentation Ceremony held at a hotel here last night (Oct 25).
Abang Johari, who is also Finance and New Economy Minister, said moving with such approaches would require efforts to increase Sarawak’s revenue.
“If we have the capability, why not? But we have worked hard to increase the state’s revenue. God willing, there are signs of improvement,” he said.
On another note, he expressed his gratitude to both state and federal civil servants for their teamwork and dedication.
He also congratulated the civil service, both at the state and federal levels for upholding the highest standards of integrity.
“The civil service in Sarawak ranks in the highest category because you are not only knowledgeable but also have integrity.
“This is our strength, and with it, I am confident that we can face even greater challenges in the future,” said Abang Johari.
