Indonesian fined for operating online gambling

KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here fined an Indonesian man RM10,000 in default 12 months in prison for operating an online gambling using a smartphone.

Andra, 26, from Sambas, Indonesia pleaded guilty before Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan to the charge under Section 4B(a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which provides for a fine up to RM100,000 and imprisonment up to five years.

He was charged with operating an online gambling using a smartphone at a house in Kampung Rampangi, at around 12.45am on Oct 15.

According to the case facts, a D7 team of the Kuching Criminal Investigation Division (CID) raided the house over suspicions of online gambling activities being carried out.

The raid resulted in the arrest of Andra, who was sitting in a room, suspected of carrying out online gambling top-up credit sale activity.

Among the items seized from him was a smartphone, mobile printer and cash amounting to RM82.

The court also ordered him to be referred to the Immigration Department for further action.
