PSSG Sarawak fosters new talent through annual silat championship

KUCHING: Pertubuhan Silat Seni Gayong Sarawak (PSSG Sarawak) aims to produced skilled and competitive silat practitioners who can represent Sarawak and Malaysia at the international level.
As part of its initiatives , recently, the association organised a 5th Edition of the Sarawak Gayong Invitation Silat Championship from Oct 23 to 26 at the Cityone Event Hall.
In a statement by the association on Monday (Oct 28), it stated that the championship aimed to showcase the talents of silat practitioners from all over Sarawak and invited participants from other states, including West Malaysia and Sabah.
The annual championship, which has been growing since its inception in 2019, attracted over 500 participants.
Among the competing teams were from Segamat Elite Team (Johor), Kuching North City Hall (DBKU), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS),Batu Lintang Teacher’s Training College, and teams from the Pertubuhan Silat Seni Gayong Sarawak divisions such as Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, and Miri.
The event was officiated by Guru Mohd Faid Musa, vice-president of Malaysian National Silat Federation (PESAKA), and also the Yang-Di Pertua for Pertubuhan Silat Seni Gayong Malaysia Kebangsaan.
The overall champion of the tournament was Team Kuching Fighters, with a total of 31 gold medals, while the runner-up was Team DBKU, collecting 14 gold medals.
“The championship featured a variety of categories for participants aged as young as four years old up to 45 years old, providing a platform for athletes to showcase their skills and potential in silat.
“The main objective of organising this event was to discover new talents, develop young athletes, and provide exposure at both local and international levels,” the statement said.
Additionally, PSSG Sarawak regards this championship as one of their Key Performance Indicators (KPI).
“This championship was not just a competition but also aimed at inspiring the younger generation to appreciate and uphold the art of silat, ensuring its continuity and appreciation for years to come,” the statement added.
