SIBU: The Sibu Hospital must pay greater attention to the issue of drug shortages at the hospital.
Sibu MP Oscar Ling Chai Yew suggested that the hospital should prepare in advance and stock sufficient quantities of medication to serve the public.
“I have received complaints from two local residents who recently visited the hospital to collect medication, only to be informed that there was an insufficient supply of certain heart medication and cholesterol medication.
“Certain medications at the hospital might face shortages towards the year’s end, possibly because the drugs are used up early, while funding has not been disbursed in time, leading to the shortage.
“The hospital and relevant authorities should take this issue seriously. The pharmacy department needs to regularly check stock levels to ensure there are no gaps in the supply chain and that there is no shortage of medication,” he said in press statement today (Oct 28).
Ling noted that domestic demand for medication is increasing, and the national budget for medical expenses is rising yearly.
Pointing out that this situation highlights two major issues in Malaysia, he said, firstly, Malaysians need to pay more attention to healthy lifestyles, as reports show that half of the nation’s citizens are overweight.
He stressed that people should exercise more, eat less fatty and fried foods, and reduce the consumption of sugary drinks and foods to avoid major health issues like diabetes, high cholesterol and hypertension.
According to him, the country spends RM4 billion annually on diabetes treatment, a significant economic burden, and the best solution is for everyone to take up exercise and live a healthy lifestyle.
He also mentioned the aging population issue in Malaysia, which is increasing the demand for healthcare services.
“I urge the public not to waste medication. People should only take the necessary quantity and amount, and collect a new supply after finishing their current medication.
“The government bears a heavy burden in covering medication costs, so residents should not take medicine only to store it until it expires and is discarded. Sibu Hospital does accept medication returns, which can help reduce the wastage of national resources,” Ling added.
