SEBUYAU: A 3.4-hectare area in Sebangan has been earmarked for the initial phase of Sebuyau Agro Coconut Research Lab Pilot Project.
According to Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, the 25-hectare pilot project encompassed surrounding areas and Kampung Tebelu in Sebuyau.
“We’ve identified 26.66 hectares of Kampung Sampat land with development potential. Ten hectares will be allocated for Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) research, and the rest for coconut replanting,” he said during the project’s pre-launch ceremony at Kampung Arus Melayu today (Nov 2).
Julaihi added that the project committee was actively seeking additional areas suitable for high-yield coconut replanting.
“Pandan, Tacunan, and Matag are among the coconut varieties we’re considering,” he said.
Inspired by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s vision of an Agro Coconut Research Lab in Sebuyau, a special committee was formed to plan and coordinate its realisation.
He approved a RM35 million budget for the project on March 26, 2024.
