MUKAH: A group of 24 members of the Mukah branch from the Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) recently conducted an educational visit to Uma Ukit Apau Koyan, Sungai Asap Belaga.

The visit aimed to broaden the knowledge of association members by allowing them to see for themselves Sarawak’s most unique house, renowned as the creator of the ‘Longest Traditional Decorative Rattan Wall or Teteng Wei,’ measuring 185.4 metres and has recently entered into the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR).

DBNA Mukah in its statement said the group travelled to the location in seven cars.

“Our arrival was warmly welcomed by the villagers and the Deputy Chairman of the Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) Uma Ukit, Upang Bayong.

“He provided a brief overview of the unique rattan wall, which took two years to complete,” it said.

“In addition, he shared that the strong unity of the Uma Ukit community in preserving the cultural heritage and traditions of the Orang Ulu people helps highlight this uniqueness,” DBNA Mukah added.

Meanwhile, Maren Uma Ngarit Lijap also expressed pride in DBNA Mukah’s visit and their appreciation of the cultural artistry of Uma Ukit.

He said it was important to preserve this heritage so that it could be passed down to future generations and to showcase the art to the world, ensuring it is not only limited to the people of Sarawak.

During the visit, members of DBNA Mukah also viewed various rattan patterns and motifs that were the main elements on the wall decorations of this longhouse, reflecting the beauty, durability, and craftsmanship of local art in adhering to traditional values.

This visit had a positive impact on association members, fostering a spirit of cooperation, mutual respect, and new learning about the diverse communities in Sarawak, with their variety of ethnicities, religions, and beliefs.
