ABU DHABI: Regional countries should establish bilateral or multilateral policy frameworks to achieve mutual understanding and alignment.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this is to ensure organised and progressive cross-border renewable energy trade.

He said there is a need for standards that can be adopted by all countries in aspects of commodity transportation methods, tariffs, and regulations.

“I am confident that with uniform standards and reduced hydrogen production costs, the hydrogen industry will establish a firm footing and grow based on supply and demand,” he said.

He was speaking at a panel discussion titled ‘Asia’s Role in Shaping the Hydrogen Market’ at the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC) 2024 on Wednesday (Nov 6).

At the same time, Abang Johari pointed out the importance of thorough research in developing technology to lower hydrogen production costs.

“I am confident we will see a shift towards hydrogen in industries and transportation systems if the costs come down,” he said.

With Sarawak’s presence at the ADIPEC, the state once again took the international stage to discuss measures to accelerate the transition to green energy, particularly hydrogen.

During the session, the Premier answered questions on national policy approaches, particularly in Asia, to stimulate the growth and adoption of hydrogen as an emission-free fuel in alignment with global efforts to address climate change driven by carbon emissions.

Following the panel discussion, he witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the state government, represented by the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), and Mubadala Investment Company to conserve mangrove forest areas in Sarawak.

Accompanying Abang Johari were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Malaysian Ambassador to the UAE Tengku Datuk Sirajuzzaman Tengku Mohamed Ariffin, Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, and Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr. Hazland Abang Hipni.
