KUCHING: The Swinburne University volleyball team is gearing up to challenge the defending champions, Curtin University, in the semi-finals of the tournament.
Debutant Jeremy Aaron Naiker expressed confidence in his team’s chances after making it to the final four.
Despite facing some hiccups in the early stages of the tournament, he believes their prospects are strong.
“I feel great about our team’s chances. So far, the opponents haven’t been too challenging.
“We’ve had a few mistakes in areas like serving and communication, but overall we’ve managed to win,” Jeremy told the Sarawak Tribune on yesterday
Coming from a mixed background of Indian, Chinese, and Lun Bawang heritage, Jeremy is hopeful that his team can rise all the way to the top and capture the championship title.
“Our goal is to beat Curtin in the semi-finals and reach the final to win the championship,” he said.
Jeremy, 17, also pointed out that last year, Curtin triumphed largely because of one standout player, who played at a level comparable to Japan’s Yuki Ishikawa.
“But this year, I feel like we have a good chance of winning,” he added confidently.
Standing well over six feet tall, Jeremy plays as an opposite hitter and is eager to make an impact in his tournament debut.
“My teammates are fantastic, and we also have a player from the SUKMA Sarawak team on our side.
“With that kind of talents, I’m expecting us to win,” he said.
The Sukan Masiswa Zon Sarawak 2024 Volleyball tournament is being held at the Stadium Datuk Kawada in the Samajaya Industrial Zone from yesterday until today.
