KUCHING: The Malaysian Traditional Orchestra (OTM) of Istana Budaya is set to expand its presence in Sarawak this month with two major programmes under the OTM Outreach Programme: Sounds of Malaysia (SOM).
In a press release, Istana Budaya announced its signature event, OTM On The Streets @ Kuching Waterfront, and the Istana Budaya-Unimas Malaysian Traditional Orchestra Concert, held in conjunction with the 2024 Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) Convocation.
“OTM On The Streets @ Kuching Waterfront follows the concept of its previous series, such as OTM On The Streets @ Pavilion Kuala Lumpur and OTM On The Streets @ Bandar Hilir Melaka, bringing the phenomenon of street orchestra performances to major tourist attractions,” the statement read.
The programme aims to offer visitors and tourists an up-close experience of Malaysia’s traditional music.
“This collaboration between Istana Budaya and the Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) features a casual orchestra performance designed to engage and delight visitors and tourists while enriching weekend activities in Kuching.
“Admission is free, and the performance will be held at the Godown Amphitheatre, Kuching Waterfront, on Nov 10 (Sunday) at 8pm,” the statement added.
The second event, the Istana Budaya-Unimas Malaysian Traditional Orchestra Concert, is a collaboration between Istana Budaya and Unimas as part of the SOM 2024 series.
“Unimas is the final university destination after Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) this year. The programme aims to educate students on the importance of preserving cultural heritage for future generations.
“SOM 2024 continues to raise awareness among university communities, particularly in public and private higher education institutions. It also provides students with insights into large-scale production management through a mentor-mentee approach,” the statement read.
Unimas students will have the opportunity to participate in Caklempong and Malay Gamelan workshops led by OTM experts Zamzahardi Mohamad Zambrin and Nurul Zaimah Zulkifli. These workshops will take place at Unimas on Nov 11, from 10am to 12pm.
This year’s OTM concert promises a unique blend of entertainment and education, serving as a tribute to Unimas students and staff.
The event will feature performances by renowned singers, including Datuk Jamal Abdillah, Wany Hasrita, Roxy, Rojer Kajol, Dhiya Suhaili and Alexander Peter Chelum.
“Popular songs such as Berkikis Bulu Betis, Bagaikan Sakti, Diamond, Menahan Rindu, Belenggu Rindu and Azura will be performed,” the release added.
Tickets for the concert, priced at RM15, RM30 and RM50, are available online at https://eticket2u.ia.unimas.my. For ticket inquiries, contact Unimas ticket sales coordinator Muhaimin at 012-888 8847.
