KUCHING: Swinburne University Sarawak made a thrilling comeback to secure their win against SIDMA College Sarawak 2-1 to become champions of the Sukan Masiswa Zon Sarawak 2024 Volleyball Tournament yesterday.

The final was a nail-biting contest, with SIDMA taking the first set 25-22 after dominating with their powerful attacks and solid defence.

However, Swinburne bounced back in the second set, cruising to a 25-15 win to level the match 1-1.

In the decider, Swinburne showed fierce determination and executed their attacks with precision, while SIDMA displayed incredible resilience and excellent defensive plays.

Despite the tough challenge, Swinburne held their ground to clinch the final set and secure the victory, 15-13.

Coach Ho Zong Xuan credited the team’s fighting spirit and “never-say-die” attitude for their success.

“I’m very happy we finally got the title because it’s been 5 years since Swinburne last won the championship.” he told Sarawak Tribune at Stadium Datuk Kawada in Samajaya Industrial Zone yesterday.

Ho acknowledged that the team’s mental strength was crucial in overcoming the setback of losing the first set.

“After the first set, I told them: ‘We are better than them. Don’t worry about what the linesman does or what their players do, just focus on our game,’” he explained.

Looking ahead, Ho is optimistic for next year.

“Only two players are in their final year-centre Nigel Dom and captain Ho Zong Chun-so the core of the team remains strong.

“Most of the players are in their first or second year, and the majority are from Sibu,” he added.

This victory marks Swinburne’s first championship win in five years.

The players left the court with their hard-earned trophy and medals, celebrating a well-deserved triumph.
