SIBU: The automotive industry which has long been associated with traditional combustion engines, is now undergoing a transformative shift toward electric vehicles (EVs).

According to Automobile & Welding Institute of Sarawak (Awisar) general manager, Jaidil Yakop, this shift is driven not only by technological progress but also by the urgent need to address environmental challenges, reduce carbon footprint, and embrace more sustainable ways of living.

“While the shift to electric vehicles promises numerous benefits, it also presents challenges. Nationally, we must address the infrastructure needs for EVs, ensure that our technicians and engineers are adequately trained and create awareness among consumers,” he said at the National Electric Vehicle Forum and Workshop (NEVFW) held at Huong Seng Motor Trading Sdn Bhd’s premises at Jalan Ding Lik Kong here on Friday (Nov 8).

The event was jointly organised by the Sibu Automobile Repairers Associatioin (Sara) and the Federation of Automobile Workshop Owners Association of Malaysia (Fawoam), supported by Sarawak Skills and Business Events Sarawak.

Jaidil said the workshop (NEVFW) was important to share solutions and align efforts to overcome challenges.

He highlighted that Awisar is committed to supporting this transformation by providing training programmes, developing skilled technicians, and promoting best practices in EV technology.

“We are living in a time of rapid change where technology is advancing at an unprecedented pace. NEVFW has been designed with this goal in mind, which will explore a range of topics essential to the future of the automotive sector.

“It covers everything from the foundational concepts of electric and hybrid vehicles to the intricate technical aspects of high-voltage systems and safety management for EVs.”

“Through lectures, hands-on demonstrations, and insightful discussions, we aim to equip you with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to excel in this evolving landscape.”

“The theme of this forum and workshop speaks on the collective responsibility to foster an ecosystem where innovation, sustainability, and skill development go hand-in-hand. As automotive professionals, we have a vital role to play in ensuring that the transition to EVs is smooth, safe, and sustainable,” he stated.
