BINTULU: Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac), Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, has proposed the reintroduction of personal income tax reduction incentives and special exemptions in anticipation of Visit Malaysia Year 2026.

He said that this initiative aims to encourage Malaysians to vacation domestically, thereby boosting the local economy.

Although the tax incentive falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Finance (MoF), Tiong said that Motac has been proactive, holding discussions with MoF and other relevant agencies to advance this proposal.

Tiong also addressed concerns regarding visa abuse and businesses operated by Chinese nationals in Semporna.

According to him, Motac has instructed the Semporna District Immigration Office to take immediate steps to tackle the issue.

The Bintulu MP acknowledged that staff shortages have affected enforcement operations.

He said Motac is collaborating with the Public Service Department to fill these vacancies and enhance enforcement efforts.

“Furthermore, Motac is considering restructuring to separate licensing and enforcement functions at both headquarters and state levels,” he said in a statement.

“As a temporary measure, contract officers will be appointed for enforcement purposes, a move expected to safeguard local business interests.”

He also announced plans to establish a task force, which he will chair, in partnership with local authorities and relevant agencies.

“This team will focus on issues such as tourism agencies run by foreigners, transportation, and the practice of locals renting out business licenses to foreigners,” he added.
