IN light of Sarawak’s ambitious plans to have its own airline and also a new airport, the state’s leaders are voicing their optimism over the potential growth and prosperity this initiative could bring to the region.
Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication cum Belaga assemblyman, Datuk Liwan Lagang shares his views on this transformative vision, emphasising the positive impact on accessibility and the local economy.
Sarawak Tribune: What steps should be taken to ensure that Sarawak’s new airport and airline contribute to sustainable tourism and eco-friendly travel in the region?
Liwan: For us in Sarawak, for example, if you want to travel to Singapore, you have to go to Kuala Lumpur first. Just imagine. So I think this is the right move, because Sarawak is as big as Semenanjung Malaysia. It is a great move for Sarawak to have its own airlines as it will benefit the community more.
Sarawak Tribune: What do you think of Sarawak’s initiative to have its own airline?
Liwan: It’s just like building roads for people to use. I mean, the people deserve it.
Sarawak Tribune: What would be an ideal name for Sarawak’s own airline, reflecting the state’s heritage, culture, or natural beauty?
Liwan: Let the Premier decide. Maybe we should call it Kenyalang Airline or Borneo Air..
Sarawak Tribune: On Sarawak building a new airport, what are you views on this?
Liwan: Our Premier is the leader of the future. The vision is the new airport can improve the economy of Sarawak. To make it easier for foreigners to invest in Sarawak … I think it’s good. We need that.
