SATOK assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki has called for a system that enforces standards for recycling, composting and waste-to-energy facilities.

He said waste management is another area where strong regulation can make a significant impact.

“While Sarawak has made strides in waste management, inconsistent enforcement and lack of standardisation in waste disposal processes hinder our progress.”

Ibrahim said during his debate on the Natural Resources and Environment Bill 2024 at the second meeting of the third session of the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on Tuesday (Nov 12).

He also said there must be a push for the adoption of sustainable waste practices by businesses, municipalities and those engaging in improper waste management and disposal must be held accountable.

“I welcome the imposition of a cess on waste generated by industries and businesses. This will nudge our economy to be more efficient and reduce wastage going to the landfill.

“This aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as the concept of environmental, social, and governance (ESG).”

He added that waste management is costly, and the cost of generating more waste should be offset by those who are producing it.

“We must incentivise waste reduction given its impact on the environment and we must push for the implementation of green waste solutions.

“Thus, I suggest that the board explore the need of public waste management campaigns as well as the provision of equipment needed to SMEs to undertake proper waste management using the Environmental Fund.

“This promotes a circular economy whereby we can minimise waste, using natural resources sustainably and regenerate the nature,” said Ibrahim.
