THE tourism industry in Sarawak is poised to experience a boom with the state planning to have its own airline and a new airport.
In line with these plans, Saribas assemblyman Datuk Razi Sitam gave his views and hopes on the matter.

Sarawak Tribune: What do you think of Sarawak’s initiative to have its own airline?

Razi: Sarawak’s growing role in international affairs, along with its strategic location in Borneo, makes the development of an independent airline and improved airport infrastructure a crucial step towards its future growth and global connectivity.

With the state government’s bold move to acquire MASwings and launch Sarawak’s own airline, my passionate drive for Sarawak’s development has lent my full support to this initiative.

I fully support the Sarawak government’s effort to have its own airline through the acquisition of MASwings, which would be a state-owned airline. This is important for the development of Sarawak, particularly given the state’s vast geography and the need to improve both domestic and international links.

Sarawak Tribune: How will Sarawak’s airline be equipped to cater specifically to the needs of passengers be it accessibility or tourism?

Razi: Owning an airline would also create healthy competition in the air travel industry, particularly in reducing ticket prices. With Sarawak increasingly becoming a hub for international events, including conferences and symposiums, there is a growing demand for more direct international flights to the state.

We are located on Borneo Island, which is shared by three countries—Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei. With Indonesia’s new capital, Nusantara, also situated in Borneo, there are ample opportunities for collaboration and development in the region.

Sarawak Tribune: On Sarawak building a new airport, what are your views on this?

Razi: The current airport is outdated and no longer suitable for modern travel needs, we need to upgrade the facilities to meet the expectations of international travellers. A more efficient and modern airport management system would not only benefit the state’s economy but also attract more international events and visitors to Sarawak.

Sarawak Tribune: In terms of location, where would be the most strategic areato build a new airport to maximise connectivity and economic growth?

Razi: The new airport location should ideally be in an area that avoids issues like strong crosswinds or mountainous terrain. A location near the coast, such as Telaga Air or Sematan, might be more suitable, although these areas are farther from Kuching. Globally, airports are often located far from city centres, with travel times of two to three hours, so this is something we should consider in the long term

Sarawak Tribune: What steps should be taken to ensure that Sarawak’s new airport and airline contribute to sustainable tourism and eco-friendly travel in the region?

Razi: In the long run, we must ensure that the new airport is well-connected by land transport, including an ART (Automated Rail Transit) system, to enhance accessibility for both locals and visitors.
