KUCHING: Sarawak’s success as the host and champion of the Para SUKMA XXI 2024 is a testament to the power of teamwork and unity, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan.
“The achievements of our athletes on the field were complemented by the tireless efforts of our unsung heroes — the volunteers and staff who worked tirelessly behind the scenes,” he said during his speech at the Para SUKMA XXI Appreciation Night at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Tuesday.
He expressed gratitude to all involved, from civil servants and statutory bodies to volunteers and media personnel.
“Without your dedicated efforts, the success of this biennial sports event would not have been possible,” he said.
“Every task, no matter how big or small, has contributed to the smooth running of this event.”
Awang Tengah, who is also Minister of International Trade, Industry, and Investment, acknowledged the significant contributions of these individuals in terms of time, energy, and creative ideas.
“You not only supported the athletes but also made Para SUKMA XXI a more inclusive and successful platform,” he added.
Sarawak’s Para Contingent emerged as the overall champion with a total of 82 gold, 53 silver, and 74 bronze medals, marking their 14th championship title.
The Para SUKMA XXI Appreciation Night was held to recognise the contributions of all staff involved in the sports event for athletes with disabilities.
Also present were Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, Deputy Ministers Datuk Mohammad Razi Sitam and Datuk Rosey Yunus, and other distinguished guests.
