SARIKEI: Jalan Belepong Sungai Belepong, a road frequently affected by floods due to its low-lying location, has been identified for upgrades under a rural development initiative led by local rep Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii.

The Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, in a statement, said the proposed improvements are part of a larger effort to maintain and enhance rural access routes in the Meradong district, submitted to the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW).

The project’s groundwork began on Thursday with a site inspection conducted by Huang’s representative Gung Chiu Kion, alongside officials from the Sarikei Division Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID).

During the visit, the team evaluated the condition of various roads and engaged with local residents to gain insight into the community’s immediate infrastructure needs.

In addition to Jalan Belepong Sungai Belepong, road repairs and culvert installations are planned for Jalan Kebun Skim Hulu Sungai Baung Tulai and Jalan Batu 8 Ulu Sungai Mador.

Jalan Kai Sing Sungai Labas is also slated for maintenance and upgrades, further stressing the commitment to improving rural connectivity in the area.

The local community expressed their appreciation for Huang who serves as the Sarikei MP and Repok assemblyman for his dedication to addressing rural infrastructure issues and improving residents’ quality of life through these initiatives.

Also present were DID officials Mary Rittie, Shahrizal Shaperi, Regina Leni, and Muhd Haziq.
