SIBU: A private worker in her 30s not only had her heart broken by a Korean man but also lost RM86,841 after falling victim to a love scam.
Sibu Police Chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili explained that the woman matched with the suspect on the Tinder app in June 2024.
He promised to meet her once his visa application was approved.
“In early July, the man claimed to have sent several packages to the victim. However, the items were supposedly held by Indonesian customs before being sent to Malaysia,” he said in a statement on Saturday.
The victim was then contacted by someone pretending to be a customs officer on July 25, who demanded several payments in order to obtain a clearance certificate so the packages could be delivered.
“The victim made 25 transactions in total, amounting to RM86,841, transferring the money into eight different local accounts,” he added.
The woman felt suspicious when further payments were still being requested and realised she had been scammed after losing contact with the man.
“Feeling deceived, the victim went to the nearest police station to file a report, prompting an investigation,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
