BINTULU: The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Sarawak is investigating a fire and minor explosion incident that occurred at OM Materials (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd’s plant in Samalaju Industrial Park on Sunday (Nov 17).

An investigative team from DOSH will visit the site after receiving clearance from the Fire and Rescue Department.

Officers from the Forensic Engineering Division at DOSH headquarters will also assist in the probe.

The incident is being investigated under Section 15 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994.

DOSH said it takes all workplace incidents seriously and urged employers to enhance their occupational safety and health standards.

On Sunday, OM Materials confirmed the incident, which occurred around 1.30 pm, involved molten material overflowing from casting molds, leading to localised explosions in the furnace workshop.

“Emergency response protocols were activated, and all personnel in the affected area were safely evacuated,” the company said in a statement.

“We are pleased to confirm that there were no casualties or injuries. The damage sustained was minor, and operations are expected to resume with minimal disruption. Relevant authorities have been notified, and the company has launched a detailed investigation.”
